Mission Statement

DC WritersCorps is a not-for-profit community service organization whose mission is to use the reading, writing, and performance of literature and media arts to get DCPS students to read and write beyond the classroom. We use performances, writing, and media production to highlight students' creative and intellectual achievements.

Youth Speaks and DC WritersCorps, along with major supporters and sponsors present the National Youth Poetry Slam

Some highlights of the event include:

Tuesday, July 15th
5 – 8pm                            Opening Ceremonies:
                                        Each team prepares 60 seconds of performance.
                                        Rayburn House Office Building Courtyard   
 
Wednesday, July 16th
3 – 5pm                            BNV 1st Annual National Town Hall Meeting at GW
                                        Recommendations for a New Administration from the Youth of America on the State of Education

6 – 730pm                         Brave New Voices Speak Green – w/ Robert Redford
                                        Presenting the Youth Speaks Green Team: winners of the Global Warming Spoken Word Contest at The Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. This event is sponsored by the US Green Building Council, and the Robert Redford Center at the Sundance Preserve.

Thursday, July 17th
10 - 6pm                            Quarter Final Rounds of the International Youth
                                         Poetry Slam (all 44 teams)
                                         The Atlas Performing Arts Center 
                     
Friday, July 18th
11 – 1pm                           Semifinals of National Youth Poetry Slam (10 teams)
                                         The Smithsonian Institute Museum Theaters 


3 – 6pm                             BNV Presents: "Hear the Children Left Behind"          
                                         BNV Speak out about the American Education System and No Child Left Behind.   Lafayette Park        
 
Saturday, July 19th
7 – 10pm                           Grand Slam Finals @ the Lincoln Theater
